Prof. Román Alvarez

Biography:
Prof. Román Alvarez is a distinguished academic currently serving as a professor at both the Institute of Geophysics and the Institute of Applied Mathematics (IIMAS) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he has been a faculty member since 1974. He completed his MSc and PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972 and 1974, respectively. Between 1989 and 1997, he held the position of director of the Institute of Geography. Prof. Alvarez has contributed significantly to the field of earth sciences as the Principal Investigator of NASA’s Lunar Sample Program between 1975 and 1977. His research interests encompass a wide range of areas, including Geothermic, Volcanology, Magnetotellurics, Remote Sensing, and Gravity and Magnetic Modeling. He maintains an active role in mentoring both graduate students and post-graduate doctorates.
In addition to his research endeavors, Prof. Alvarez has been engaged in editorial activities, overseeing the coordination of Special Issues, contributing to International Memoires and Bulletins, serving as a General Rapporteur, and providing guidance as an Editorial Adviser. His continuous commitment to academia is evidenced by his consistent publication of research articles and participation in various academic evaluation committees. His extensive involvement in numerous research projects, both within Mexico and internationally, underscores his prominent position in the field of geophysics and applied mathematics.
